I took the first steps towards making a living from writing while wandering simultaneously through Europe and my 20’s. After some publishing success, I returned to Australia to complete the excellent Professional Writing and Editing Diploma at RMIT.
There, a group of fellow students and I formed a publishing house called Cardigan Press. We published our own short fiction, and the short fiction of others, in a series of books that drew some pretty good reviews, actually.
On other fronts, my copywriting led to roles with both RMIT and Lonely Planet. In 2004 I took a communications role with Australian skin care brand Aesop, where I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to help define company-wide copy and communications standards and practices. Soon I was not just wrangling their words, but everything the words ended up being used on or in, from labels and packaging to PR and digital. Five years later I moved into a marketing management role for Asia, working across Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Malaysia.
I then jumped the ditch into agency life, taking the role of Copywriter for the Melbourne digital agency IE. This turned into a Creative Strategist position, where my focus was as much on using my broader communications, marketing and brand experience as about writing great copy. Here I was lucky enough to again work with Lonely Planet, as well as Tourism Malaysia, Sensis, Hoyts, Mitre 10, Converse, MCVB and a number of other organisations across the retail, government and not-for-profit sectors.
Along the way I’ve freelanced for a range of print and digital clients, such as March Studio, the ABC and Travelmuse. I continue to look for interesting and challenging work that gives me the opportunity to use my writing and creative problem-solving skills. So contact me and let’s chat about the vagaries of copy and creative, and how to get the most out of them.
